Livermore, Calif., April 22, 2024: For thousands of years, carrier pigeons have transported messages and small items during war and peace. Pigeons also play an important role in John G. Bluck’s new mystery novel, “Pigeons of Death,” because they help smuggle drugs. The book will be published May 28 by Rough Edges Press, an imprint of Wolfpack Publishing.
“In his newest Luke Ryder novel, Bluck unveils a thrilling underworld where even the skies hold secrets,” said Rachel Del Grosso, an editor at Rough Edges Press.
“In ‘Pigeons of Death,’ birds carry narcotics from Mexico to Kentucky in a Pony Express-like system,” Bluck said. “Deputy Sheriff Luke Ryder goes undercover as a stable hand to investigate the murder of the owner of a Kentucky horse farm, where racehorse sales enable money laundering.”
“Pigeons” is the fourth book in the Luke Ryder mystery/thriller series. The first Ryder novel is “Death in the Holler.” In this book Luke solves a murder that takes place on a Kentucky farm's food plot. A 2023 New York Post article recommends “Holler” as one of 20 action-packed books to take on vacation.
In book two of the series, “Murder at NASA,” Luke goes undercover at a NASA center in California to investigate a cold case murder. The third book, “Mayhem at Sea,” is a thriller. While on an Alaska vacation cruise, Luke deals with pirates who hijack the ship and demand ransom payments. Both “Murder at NASA” and “Mayhem” won Public Safety Writer Association book awards.
Bluck and his wife, Sheryl, are residents of Livermore, Calif. Bluck retired from NASA after thirty years of service. Before that, he was an engineer at ABC radio network, and he also filmed daytime crime in Washington, D.C., for WMAL-TV (now WJLA-TV). Earlier, during the Vietnam War, he served in the Army as a journalist at Ft. Lewis, Washington.
